We at FARSENS have developed a full passive (YES, it means no battery on tag AT ALL!) wireless sensors. For more information check www.farsens.com As you can see in the video, you can power commercial sensors with a commercial RFID reader from as far as 2 meters!!!! With the integrated standard communication, the RF IC can communicate with commercial low power: (temperature sensor) (accelerometer) (pressure sensor) (ambient light sensor) (humidity sensor) etc. The video starts by showing how the tag receives energy from the reader. You can see that by looking at the multimeter right after we hit the EPC button in the reader's display (this triggers the ID number request from the tag). The voltage starts increasing and as soon as the digital part is powered, the reader receives the ID number on its display. Then we are able to communicate with the IC and ask for the accelerometer data, first writing the correct operation mode and then asking for the readouts. We used a commercial 3 axis accelerometer for this video and the mode is set to a data rate of 0.5Hz, so the display refreshes every two seconds. In the second part of the video, we show the communication distance by moving away from the tag. The moment we get too far, the voltage starts decreasing, so we get to the point were you can still see that the voltage is high. Close to 2 meters on this ...
